The White Sox have traded Javier Vazquez & Boone Logan to the Atlanta Braves. In return, the Sox get Tyler Flowers, Brent Lillibridge, Jonathan Gilmore, & Santos Rodriguez. I like this trade quite a bit. Tyler Flowers has a chance to be a major offensive force. If he can stay behind the plate, he has the ability to be a top 5 offensive catcher. His performance in the AFL was outstanding (387/460/973 with 12 HR in only 20 games). This capped an already impressive season with Myrtle Beach in high Class A (288/427/494). His numbers are even lower than they otherwise might have been, as Myrtle Beach is a very tough place to hit.

Santos Rodriguez is basically a lottery ticket. He has a great arm, but is so far from the majors that his career could go in any number of directions. Lillibridge and Gilmore are likely no more than bench players.

I have to admit, I'm not going to miss Vazquez all that much. He had a fantastic arm, and was a workhorse. But his results never lived up to his peripherals, and they haven't done so since his days with the Expos. At some point, you have to look at results, and his results were mediocre at best. However, he was a class act, and I wish him all the best in Atlanta. As for Boone Logan, good riddance!

The White Sox have traded Nick Swisher (& Kanekoa Texeira) to the New York Yankees today. In return, the Sox get Jeff Marquez, Wilson Betemit, & Jhonny Nunez. Kenny Williams has done a lot to gain the trust of Sox fans over the last few years, but I think this is a terrible trade. Nick obviously had a bad year, but there are many signs that it was a fluke. His BABIP (batting average on balls in play) was a career low .249, but his line drive percentage was 20.9%, which was a career high. Taken together, it sounds like he was hitting the ball harder than ever, but hitting them right at people. This isn't likely to continue. I'd expect something close to 250/370/470 from Swisher in 2009. which is plenty valuable from a player as versatile as he is.

The return for Nick is terrible. Wilson Betemit had plenty of promise as a youngster in the Braves system, and has shown flashes of potential at the major league level, but has never really put it together, and likely never will. Jeff Marquez and Jhonny Nunez are, at best, fungible middle reliever types. I do not like this trade at all. We'll miss you Nick!

I added these three 8x10 photos this week. I already had two Cotts 8x10s, but this one is from the World Series, so I couldn't resist.

Picked up some more great signed cards over the last few days. I don't think I'll be picking up any more Quentin autos that feature him in an Arizona uniform. Nine should be plenty! Also, with this J.C. Martin, I'm now one step closer to completing my 1959 Sox set!

I've been trying to pick up a reasonably priced, while unquestionably authentic, autograph of Bill Veeck for a long time now. And I've finally done it! It is even PSA/DNA authenticated!

I picked up the following 4 signed cards this week. I'm particularly excited about the Bonilla, as it has an early career signature, which looks much better than anything signed after be became a star.

I added a 2005 Upper Deck Pros & Prospects Signs of Stardom auto of Scott Podsednik to the collection today. He is pictured in a Brewers uniform, but has a Sox logo on the card.

I added a new autographed card to my collection today. It is from the 2001 SP Authentic Chirography set. Card number RV. The immortal Robin Ventura. Unfortunately, this card was produced during his time with the Mets, but a Robin Ventura auto is a Robin Ventura auto.
