SCN member flautosonline recently did a very small cards-only signing with Ken Griffey Jr.  I did not send in for the signing.  Chris had a few extras available afterwards, and he gave me a fair price on two of the extras.  I really want a 1989 UD rookie for my collection, but apparently Griffey doesn't like signing that card.

Ken Griffey Jr. is my least favorite athlete of all time.  I cringed when the White Sox acquired him down the stretch in 2008.  Not only was he pretty much done as a player, but that meant that I'd have to add some Griffey items to my collection.  I can finally cross him off of my rookie card wantlist.

I also picked up a 2008 UD Sweet Spot card signed by Griffey.  It doesn't fill any specific needs in my collection, but I couldn't pass up an IP Griffey Sox card.

I just finished adding 2011 Gypsy Queen and 2011 Topps Attax checklists to the site.  You can view them at the following link:

2011 Checklists

I really like the artwork on the Gypsy Queen cards, even if the design itself is somewhat lackluster.  I do have one question though.  Where is Paul Konerko?  He was by far the White Sox best player in 2010.  Yet he does not have a Gypsy Queen card.

Here are examples of both designs:

I was in Huntsville, AL on business this week.  I decided to make a 2 hour road trip down to Birmingham to catch a Barons game.  It was my first time in Birmingham.  Prior to the game, I stopped at Flip Burger Bistro.  I had a "d'lux burger".  The burger was made from ribeye, and it had lobster, foie gras, and some other interesting stuff on it.  It was quite tasty!

Anyway, back to baseball.  This was my first time graphing a White Sox minor league team.  I had a blast!  The stadium was very nice.  I particularly liked the Robin Ventura Patio.  I had great seats 3 rows behind the Barons dugout.  Unfortunately, the Barons got shutout.  I still had a great time.  On to the totals!

Justin Greene - 8/8 (Justin commented that I was the first person that had ALL of his cards)
Greg Infante - 8/8
Charlie Leesman - 8/8 (When he came over, I told him "I have quite a few, I hope you don't mind".  He replied "At least you don't have 30 like some of the people I see")
Ozzie Lewis - 4/8 (he was in a hurry)
Shane Lindsay - 5/5
Johnnie Lowe - 3/3
Christian Marrero - 8/8
Brian Omogrosso - 8/8 (Brian is a very cool guy.  He was making fun of the photos on all of his cards.)
J.R. Perdew - 5/5
Jared Price - 2/2
Brandon Short - 4/8 (He was also in a hurry.  When he saw me, he asked "Didn't I see you at spring training?"  I can't believe he remembered me!)

I was the only person getting autographs, so I missed a few guys.  The main guys I missed that I would have liked to have gotten were Josh Phegley and Seth Loman.  I'm planning a road trip to Jacksonville for another Barons game, so hopefully I'll get them then.

Total - 63 cards

Well, today was my last day graphing spring training.  Part of me is sad, and part of me is relieved that I can get back to my normal life.  I will probably stop by in the next couple of weeks for extended spring training, in hopes of getting Strasburg.  Chien-Ming Wang should also be there, as well as a few others.

Anyway, the AAA/AA Braves were supposed to be here for a game today.  Unfortunately, they canceled the games.  The fields here are still in pretty rough shape from all of the rain.  I assume that is the reason for the cancellation.

So my last day was spent with the Nats.  I'm out of cards for most of the guys.  There were a few guys that were among the final Major League cuts, so at least I got a couple of new guys.

I also got Bryce Harper one last time.  I didn't get him at all on my first 6 or so visits to Nats camp.  I got him 4 times during my last 3 visits.  A kid asked him for a picture, and Bryce replied "I don't do pictures".

My totals:

Colin Balester - 4/4
Brian Bixler - 2/2
Justin Bloxom - 4/4
Brian Daubach - 4/4
Jesus Flores - 3/3
Bryce Harper - 1/1
Destin Hood - 1/1
Patrick Lehman - 6/6
Steve Lombardozzi - 1/2
Chris Marrero - 3/3
Jason Martinson - 3/3
Ryan Mattheus - 4/4
Derek Norris - 3/3
Elvin Ramirez - 2/2
Henry Rodriguez - 2/3
Josh Smoker - 1/1
Steven Souza - 3/3
Craig Stammen - 2/2
Chien-Ming Wang - 2/2, 2/2

Today's total - 53 cards

I hit Nats camp again today.  I know, I know, big surprise!  I'm running out of stuff to get signed for most of these guys, so I've been showing up in the afternoon, mainly to get the visiting team.

When I got there, I noticed that the Nats major league pitchers were practicing on the AAA field.  Steven Strasburg was one of the guys there.  When I got over there, there was a sort of makeshift line forming, so I got in line.  At the end of the workout, they jogged off the field.  All except Strasburg.  He stayed back for a couple of minutes.  Chien-Ming Wang was the only person anybody asked to stop, and he signed for everybody that asked.  I didn't want to lose my spot, so I passed.  Strasburg finally jogged off of the field... and of course wouldn't stop to sign anything.  I am still 0 for forever with this guy!

When I got back to the minor league workout, there were quite a few graphers standing by the clubouse.  I decided to walk back to the back fields.  Bryce Harper was on one of these fields, and there were only a handful of people back there to get autographs, most of which were kids.  When the workout finished, the kids asked him to sign, and he did.  When the 3 adults, myself included, asked him to sign, he obliged as well.  He did personalize for the adults. I got him on an 8x10 for a friend from SCN.  When he got to the clubhouse, he didn't stop to sign for any of the people there.

Shortly after getting Harper, the Tigers bus arrived.  None of the players and coaches were wearing their jerseys.  We had to wait a good half hour after they got to the dugouts for them to put their jerseys on.

The way these players were acting, you would have thought they were the Yankees or something.  There were by far the worst signing minor league teams I have ever seen.  Several players and coaches refused to sign.  A lot of the ones that did sign either limited to 1 per person or personalized or both.

I finished up pretty quickly back there, and began making my way to my car.  Most of the graphers were still in the back with the Tigers.  I decided to hang out by the Nats clubhouse for a few minutes, as they were starting to trickle out for their games with the Tigers.  There were about 6 people there.

After a few minutes, Bryce Harper came out.  The first person to approach was a grown man with a bat.  I was SURE that Bryce wouldn't sign.  Of course, he signed.  Not only that, but he wasn't personalizing!  So I got him for the second time that day, on an SI.

My quantity for today was pretty terrible, but I can't complain about getting Bryce Harper twice!

Corey Brown - 1/1
Alex Cintron - 4/4
Jesus Flores - 2/2
Jeff Frazier - 2/2
Archie Gilbert - 2/2
Bryce Harper - 1/1 (8x10, personalized), 1/1 (Sports Illustrated, not personalized)
Steve Lombardozzi - 2/2
Chris Marrero - 3/3
Derek Norris - 2/2
Tim Pahuta - 2/2
Joe Testa - 1/1

Chris Cron - 4/4
Brandon Douglas - 1/1
Cale Iorg - 1/1
Bryan Pounds - 1/1
Chance Ruffin - 1/4 (personalized!)
Danny Worth - 4/4

You'll never guess where I went today?  That's right, Nats camp!  I didn't spend the whole day there like I did on my previous visits.  I got there a bit before 11am.  My main objective was the Astros.

There was one other VERY big difference between today and all of the other days I've spent at Nats camp this year.  Bryce Harper actually signed!  Of course, I didn't have the SI with me that I have been carrying with me every day.  Still, I'm happy just to have seen him pick up a pen!

Nyjer Morgan came over to play in the minor league game against the Astros.  Surprisingly, he was very friendly.

The first Astros player I approached after the bus arrived was Bobby Doran.  Before I even found his page in my book, he said "I'll sign one".  Not the best start!

Luckily, just about everybody else was great.  The only other guy that was a bit iffy was Jay Austin.  He didn't say a word, and only signed 2 of 3.

I had two different senior league cards for Tom Spencer.  After he signed them, he asked if he could borrow my book for a second.  He then took it to the bench in the dugout and was showing everybody his cards.

Surprisingly, I had way more cards for the Astros Single A teams today than I did for their AAA/AA teams that were here on Thursday.

Justin Bloxom - 4/4
Brian Daubach - 4/4
Jesus Flores - 2/2
Bryce Harper - 1/1

I've got a quick site update for you guys.  I've added checklists for the 2011 sets that have been released.  This includes Topps, Topps Heritage, and Topps Opening Day.  I'm in the process of adding insert sets as well.

These are the "enhanced" checklists, with an image of every card.  Enjoy!

I spent yet another afternoon at Nats minor league camp on Thursday.  Maybe I should just sleep there and save myself some driving!

I got Pat Corrales and Davey Johnson for the first time this spring.  Both were very friendly.

I apologized to Archie Gilbert for bothering him so much.  He responded "Hey, it's better than not being bothered at all!"

Tom Lawless isn't the nicest guy.  First, he glared at me when I asked for his autograph.  Then he glared at me again when he handed my card back.  Later, he was just unloading on Astros AA catcher Federico Hernandez.  He was yelling at him for an extended period of time.  At one point, he was taking shots at his English... and these were not good natured shots either.

Jimmy Barthmaier has signed 7 cards for me this spring.  If I put all 7 autographs together, there might be enough ink to make one legible autograph!

Here are my totals:

Paul Applebee - 1/1
Michael Aubrey - 2/2

Today I visited Jupiter for the first time.  I spent most of the time getting Marlins minor leaguers, but I also got a few major leaguers, as well as a couple of Mets minor league coaches.

I got to hang out with Scoreset (and his hilarious friend) from sportsgraphing.com.  Having somebody to hang out with definitely helps the day go by.  It was great witnessing his epic ability to knock out stacks!

Most of the Marlins major leaguers wouldn't sign in the morning.  A lot of them did sign at the end of the day, but I had a 2+ hour drive, so I left before most of them had left.

I was the only person to get Javier Vazquez.  I'm not proud of the groveling I had to do to get him to sign for me, but I refused to leave empty handed!

We saw purple pants and pink shirts, Wyatt Earp mustaches and insane birds... it was a good day!

Oh yeah, Hanley Ramirez is a tool.  It has to be said.

Jeff Allison - 2/2
Chase Austin - 2/2
Andy Barkett - 2/2
