Sases for Sox: Danny Tartabull

Danny Tartabull had a 10 year run as a very good hitter in the American League. From 1984 to 1994, had a 139 OPS+ on a 278/374/505 slash line. 1996 was his only season with the Sox, and it came after his peak, but he still put up a solid 111 OPS+. I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the fact that he consistently signs his mail for a pretty reasonable price. Now that I’ve finally tested the waters and knocked out the Upper Deck card I needed, I’ll probably send a few more cool cards and a baseball. Thanks Mr. Tartabull!

Sases for Sox: Richie Zisk

In a recent Sases for Sox post, I mentioned that I was surprised Thad Bosley had started signing his mail again. Well, that surprise was nothing compared to my utter shock when Richie Zisk starting signing again! I don’t know why it took me so long to send to him. Now that I’ve finally gotten a rare Sox card signed by Richie, I might risk sending him a baseball for my “Southside Hitmen” collection. The 1977 White Sox are one of my very favorite Sox teams that were before my time, and Richie is really the only guy I still need on a baseball with the “Southside Hitmen” inscription. In any case, I’m really thrilled to add this card to my collection. Thanks Mr. Zisk!

Sases for Sox: Thad Bosley

I was surprised to see that Thad Bosley started reliably signing his mail again this year. He is better known as a member of the Cubs, but he played for the Sox first! He never quite broke through as a starting caliber Major League player, but he did play 14 years in the big leagues. Not a whole lot of people can say that!

Sases for Sox: Cliff Politte

Cliff Politte was one of the most underrated members of the 2005 World Series champs. You’d probably be shocked to find out that he had a higher bWAR (Baseball Reference Wins Above Replacement) than Jermaine Dye, A.J. Pierzynski, and Juan Uribe. He was the highest rated relief pitcher on the team, and the fifth highest in the American League.

Cliff has always been a great mail signer, so I don’t know why it took me this long to send to him. In any case, I’m super happy to knock these two cards off of my Upper Deck and 05 Topps World Series project wantlists. Thanks Mr. Politte!

Sases for Sox: Steve Carlton

Over the years I’ve started to really like multi-signed cards. So I sent a couple of cards to HOFer Steve Carlton that feature him with Sox players. I wish he had more Sox cards, and that the ones he does have were nicer. In any case, I’m very happy to add these to the collection. I’ll be sending the Fleer off to Carlton Fisk shortly. Thanks Mr. Carlton!
